Customer Review: No Documentation? Seriously?
Summary: 1 Stars
ID5 retails for $1600, and my upgrade cost about $600. It took a week to find someone who could tell us what the serial number (supposedly inside the box) was so we could install it, two hours to install it, and one hour to crash it by attempting to use master pages from an ID4. And that was when I learned that there was, really, no documentation. There is a folder called "Documentation," which contains a ReadMe file in 29 languages. That's it. No book, no PDF, not even one of their "Adobe Classroom" what's its. $1600.
After two days of use, I am profoundly grateful that the ID5 installation did not remove my ID4, since I can go back to it if the bugs become intolerable. On the other hand, ID5 did not merely let me keep my ID4 installation; it ignored it. That is to say, I lost my recent files list, which meant tracking down the Library files I routinely open. I lost my Keyboard Shortcuts, which I had painstakingly created after thrashing through the morass of Command hierarchies to create.
As for bugs, the worst one is the complete crash caused by attempting to use a Master Page from an ID4 document: consistent, isolated, repeatable. I finally recreated the master page from scratch to get around the problem. Less notable is the failure to "notice" where an opened file came from. In other words, after saving a file from Folder B, I open a file from Folder A; and when I hit Save (and no, I am not accidentally hitting Save As), it offers to save the file in Folder B. Also less notable but extremely annoying: Functionality has been changed without documenting the changes (or anything else, for that matter), so that suddenly things that I do with "muscle memory" no longer work. I won't bother to list what they are; they are simply WTF moments that I may or may not notice. Imagine if you found yourself with a car with turn signal switch on the left... irritating. The gas pedal on the left....
All in all, a deeply regretted upgrade, although it did repair the relatively minor bug in ID4 that convinced me to make the transition.
When it's time for my next upgrade, I'll be looking at Quark.
