Software Reviews of Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Wonderful product for a novice like me Summary: 5 StarsWell, I read quite a few reviews about memory leaks, sluggish performance and lack of training material or documentation. I must say that for a novice like me and a first time Photopshop user or for that matter a first time graphics editing software user, I found Photoshop Elements 5 to be terrific and especially in comparison to Paintshop Pro XI. I first downloaded a trial version of Paintshop pro. While it had some good features, it was really slow, had bugs like the application crashing and closing on its own. Also the lack of convenient and very sluggish text editing caused lots of problems for my CD template design. Then I gave Photoshop Elements 5 a try and found it to be comparatively very fast. No performance issues, not at all sluggish on my laptop that does have a Core duo processor and is relatively a new and high end laptop. So one would imagine that there will be no performance issues on desktops that are fairly recent. Of course, it is common sense that one must use machines with good processors and memory for graphics editing, it is unreasonable to expect a lot of features for this price and a thin high performance software that just flies. Text editing features are wonderful in comparision to Paint shop pro.
Lastly on the training material and learning curve, I became familiar with this in a few hours and had no problems using it at all. Remember that I have never worked in Photoshop or any serious graphics editing software earlier and am a complete novice except for a few bitmaps that I created on MS Paint. I was able to design my CD templates very well. Not sure what people are complaining about lack of instructions. I found the help files useful whenever I got stuck and anyone with basic aptitude on applications like MS office should be able to figure it out quite easily. I also did some photo editing and got some good results. While some of the advanced features may definitely require more documentation as some of the others here mention, I am sure there is no point in making a serious issue of lack of documentation or performance, especially for the 100 bucks that gives you Photoshop software.
Go for it.
Customer Review: It Takes Some Work But It's Worth It! Summary: 5 StarsAdobe delivers an excellent program for organizing and editing your photos. The only catch is that they do a mediocre job in explaining how to use the program to its fullest, which leaves you in one of two positions...either (1) experiment a lot with trial and error, or (2) buy a companion guide or manual to speed up the learning process [Kelby and Brundage have written some very good books]. Either route requires effort, but the program is certainly worth the effort.
Customer Review: Great Upgrade Summary: 5 StarsI had an older version of Photoshop Elements and recently upgraded to version 5.0. I'm thrilled with the improvements with editing and organizing my digital photo collection. Impressed with the new templates and layouts also.
Customer Review: Five years of tagging down the drain Summary: 1 StarsDo not attempt to try the download trial and then buy the retail box. There are separate sets of keys, and mixing them caused problems which the tech support people could not solve. The catalog, nearly 10,000 photos was gone. The orginals are backed up, but all those years of tagging are gone.
Tech support said they should give me the product for free as compensation, wrote this in the case file, and transferred me to the usual gang of idiots in customer support, who would not do anything, but insisted on taking all my information (again) before telling me they would do nothing, and that there was no recourse. I wish there was a decent alternative to Adobe, but alas, we are stuck with them.
Customer Review: great product. as good as Photoshop with a few plus items Summary: 5 StarsVery nice. I love the full edit. As good as the original and like having the bridge right there. Better for Scrapbookers
