Software Reviews of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 [Mac]Customer Review: Powerful Features for Snapshooters to Pro Photographers, and the UI Is Getting Better. Summary: 4 StarsI upgraded from Photoshop Elements 3 to PE 8, skipping versions 4 and 6, so I cannot say if it is worth upgrading from PE6 to PE8. New features that Adobe has announced for PE8 are: Recompose tool allows you to squish the elements of your picture together without distorting them if you want to change the size or aspect ratio of your photo. Photomerge Exposure allows you to easily combine 2 photos with different exposures to get the optimum foreground and background exposures. Photomerge Scene Cleaner allows you to quickly remove unwanted elements from a photo using another photo of the same scene. Smart Brushes automatically create new layers when painting selected areas. You could do these things in Elements before, but these are short-cut, easy-to-use features. There are a few more. Take a look at the demos on Adobe's web site to see if the upgrade would be worth it to you.
The upgrade was definitely worth it to me, but I'm coming from clunky PE3. The first thing I noticed is the hugely improved file browser, which is now a stand-alone application called Adobe Bridge. Quickfix is as bad as ever, but there is an additional option between Quickfix and Full Edit: Guided Edit gives you access to many of the most-used tools of Full Edit and tells you what to use them for. For example, if you want to touch up a flaw in a photo, it tells you how to use the Healing Brush and provides the brush for you. This is especially useful for brightness and contrast, which I used to find easier to correct in iPhoto than in Elements. But now we have a brightness and contrast panel in Guided Edit that works well. It's not comprehensive. For example, you may prefer to use the Clone Stamp rather than the Healing Brush for touch-ups, but it is very helpful if you want to do something straightforward and don't want a laundry list of options.
As you may have guessed, I am not a digital artist. I'm a photographer who shot slides for many years, so I am accustomed to doing my best to get it right in-camera. Touch-ups were difficult and costly. I'm still in that mode, so I use Elements for retouching, dodging and burning, cropping, color correction, and combining photos. Nothing fancy. Graphic designers, web designers, and digital artists will undoubtedly find PE8 inadequate and want CS4. PE8 doesn't support 16-bit processing for all functions. It does not offer CMYK color format. It doesn't have layer masks. Those are some of the major differences between Elements and CS4, but the capabilities of PE8 are pretty amazing.
I want to mention the Help material, because it was useless in PE3. Adobe's Help is much-improved. They have some help in the application Help section, but there is more online. The online Help is organized by what type of edit you want to perform. It's easy to navigate, and the step-by-step instructions are clear. You can also download a PDF of every help page for use offline. If you feel you need more guidance to Elements' features, I recommend Scott Kelby's "The Photoshop Elements 8 Book for Digital Photographers". Kelby's Elements books are clearly illustrated, provide step-by-step instructions, and make sense of it all. PE8 requires a Mac with Intel processor and OS 10.4.11 or later. I still can't stand Quickfix, but PE8 is a great value that serves all levels of photographers well.
